Riyadh

An editorial orientation to Diriyah on the edge of Riyadh: the UNESCO-listed At-Turaif district, the wider heritage area, and how the destination is being reopened.

Diriyah, on the edge of Riyadh, is the historic seat of the first Saudi State and one of the country’s most important cultural areas. At its heart, the UNESCO-listed At-Turaif district preserves a remarkable cluster of mud-brick palaces, mosques and residential quarters along Wadi Hanifah.

The wider Diriyah area is being progressively reopened as a major cultural destination, with restored buildings, museums, public squares and walkways. A first visit can focus on At-Turaif and the immediate heritage trail; later visits can extend into the new cultural precincts as they open.
