An editorial orientation to AlUla in northwest Saudi Arabia: how the destination is organised, what the main heritage areas are, and how to plan a longer visit.

AlUla, in the northwest of the Kingdom, is one of Saudi Arabia’s defining cultural destinations. A longer stay lets visitors connect the UNESCO-listed Nabataean city of Hegra (Mada’in Salih), the older Dadanite settlement, the inscriptions at Jabal Ikmah, the historic Old Town, and the surrounding desert landscapes of Sharaan and Ashar.

The destination is run as an organised cultural region, with access to major archaeological sites managed by the official AlUla destination operator. Planning a multi-day visit is therefore more about pacing — heritage in the cooler hours, viewpoints and walks later — than logistics. Travel is easiest by air to AlUla and a hire car or operator transport on site.
