About

The historic core of Jeddah on the Red Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its coral-stone houses, carved wooden roshan balconies and old souqs.

Historic Jeddah, known as Al-Balad, is the old core of the city and one of the most important surviving examples of Red Sea coastal architecture. The district’s tall coral-stone houses, with their carved wooden roshan balconies and shaded alleyways, grew up around the role of Jeddah as the historic gateway to Makkah for pilgrims arriving by sea.

Al-Balad has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. The area is undergoing major restoration, with public squares, markets, mosques, and museums being progressively reopened. Please verify current access arrangements and any closures from the official source before your visit.

Opening hours, ticket prices and access rules may change. Please verify details from the official source before planning your visit.
